On 25 September 2026, Ageing Concern Foundation (ACF), through the Monthly Discussion Forum on Ageing (MDFA), joined other partners in convening the Inaugural Dementia Symposium 2026 at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Nairobi. Held as part of World Alzheimer’s Month, the symposium brought together stakeholders to strengthen awareness, dialogue and action on dementia and ageing.
Guided by the theme “The Earlier You Know, The More You Can Do: A Dementia Diagnosis Matters,” discussions explored the importance of recognizing early signs of dementia, seeking timely assessment, supporting caregivers, planning ahead and promoting appropriate care and support.
A key message from the discussions was that “mental capacity does not mean physical incapacity.” Cognitive changes should not automatically lead to assumptions that an older person cannot remain active, participate in community life or contribute meaningfully to society. Participants emphasized the importance of respecting dignity, challenging stigma and ensuring that people living with dementia remain at the center of decisions affecting their lives.
The forum reinforced a shared message: dementia does not define the whole person, and there is always something that can be done to promote dignity, improve support and enhance quality of life. It also highlighted the need for stronger collaboration among families, communities, healthcare providers and policymakers to build a more informed and supportive response to dementia in Kenya.
The MDFA continues to provide a platform for dialogue and knowledge-sharing among community health promoters, Older Persons Associations, health professionals and other stakeholders to advance healthy ageing and the rights and well-being of older persons.
